4 Common Summer Allergies

A patient-friendly overview of 4 common summer allergies, when an ENT evaluation may be useful and which questions to discuss with a qualified specialist.

Summer is the time for getting outdoors and enjoying the fresh air and great temperatures. On the other hand, summer is also one of the worst times for allergy sufferers. These allergy triggers can hit during the spring or wait until June and July, but either way, they make enjoying the season a lot more difficult.

Why Do People Suffer from Summer Allergies?

Just like spring, summer allergies are triggered mostly by inhaled allergens. As the pollen count climbs, it can get into the nose and trigger the itchy, watery eyes, and stuffy nose.

In the summer, pollen counts get high, which means worsening allergy symptoms for most people. The most common pollens in the air in the summer are weeds and grasses since trees finish their pollinations in the spring.

What are the Most Common Summer Allergens?

Allergies can vary depending where you live in Florida, but some of the most common seen in the summer include:

Weeds – From cockleweed to pigweed, tumbleweed and ragweed, these weeds get up into the air (especially as more homeowners start mowing their lawns) and can aggravate even those with minor allergies.

Grasses – These usually include Bermuda, blue grass, orchard grass, red top grass, sweet vernal grasses and timothy varieties. Again, as people start manicuring their lawns for the summer, this also kicks up allergies.

Pollution – Unfortunately, pollution can also cause a rise in allergies in the summer. Because pollution levels reach their height while more people are driving, these pollutants in the ozone combined with other allergens create ozone around certain areas in Florida.

Insects – Certain insects can also be more common in the summer. These include yellow jackets, hornets, wasps, and bees, just to name a few.

Lastly, dust mites, mold, and dander can still be an issue for allergy sufferers in the summer. While these allergens happen year-round, those who have outdoor allergies will not find relief indoors if they do not have air filtration systems functioning at full speed.
